Today is the beginning of one of the busiest times of year at airports. Millions will be moving through airport terminals and with all those bags being screened at security checkpoints, bins will be in short supply and shoes in high demand. TSA has recently released some suggestions for fliers who will be traveling the busy skies this holiday season.
TSA security director Jeff Holmgren notes that one of the things that slows checkpoint lines down the most if when travelers forget to take their laptops out of their bags, which requires a re-running of both the laptop and the bag. A good rule of thumb is to scan the instructions posted at the front of the security checkpoint that list what items need to be removed from your bag for screening.
One change that will be noticed by families traveling this holiday is that children 12 years and younger will not be required to take off their shoes and put them in a bin. They will be allowed to keep their shoes on while they walk through the metal detector.
It’s extremely important to remember the holiday travel is more challenging than travel at other times of the year. You never know what delays you are going to experience in regards to weather, traffic, parking, etc. It’s important to give yourself an extra custom of time to be prepared in the event you do experience a delay. If you miss your flight due to delays, you never know what challenges you will experience getting on another flight.
Also, don’t forget: if you’re flying with gifts make you sure pack them unwrapped, or else you will likely be asked to unwrap the presents when you reach the security checkpoint.
