Not only are we in the middle of the holiday season with Thanksgiving past and Christmas coming up fast, we’re also just beginning flu season. Added to this of course, is the fact that we are also approaching the busiest time of the year for air travel, and we are all aware how different the environment in the cabin when you are in the air. Medications work differently and you become quickly dehydrated, all while breathing in recycled air. Check out these tips for staying healthy while flying.
Don’t fly soon after surgery. If you have had surgery recently, check with your physician before flying, as the change in cabin pressure can impede the healing process.
Avoid flying while sick. While you can’t always help it and sometimes have no choice but to fly, do try to reschedule travel if you have a head cold, flu or sinus infection, since the changes in cabin pressure will make you feel worse. If you have to travel, carry decongestants or herbal remedies and coat your nasal area with petroleum jelly to avoid tenderness or cracking.
Travel insurance. Purchase travel insurance before you fly so you are prepared in the event of illness or accidents.
Stretch. Stretching keeps blood flowing and alleviates cramping and other aches and pains that come from sitting for too long at one time.
Load up on vitamins. There is no such thing as fresh air during flights and the confined space and recycled air can leave you susceptible to air-borne infections and germs. Make sure you take your vitamins before you fly. You may want to even consider taking one of the vitamin boosting herbal remedies that are available on the market today. It’s also not unreasonable to consider taking a germ killing face gator to breathe into, especially if your immune system has been weakened recently by a flu or virus.
