If you’re a road warrior, you’re well aware of the challenge that is staying in shape while living out of your suitcase. However, exercise doesn’t have to be a lost cause. A little planning and some dedication can go a long way in helping you stay in shape while on the road. Consider these simple fitness tips.
- Pack for fitness. Before booking your room, make sure the hotel has a fitness room or that a gym is located nearby. Consider joining a nationwide gym that you can visit when you are traveling. They may ask you to pay a small fee while others may include out-of-state visits in your membership. Always pack with your fitness goals in mind, including gym shoes, exercise clothing, a jump rope, music and headphones, weightlifting gloves, and whatever else you might need.
- Don’t wait to get started. Any activity you perform during the course of the day will be beneficial. Wear walking shoes when traveling and, if you have a lengthy layover, store your Delsey carry-on luggage in a locker and walk briskly around the terminal.
- Evaluate your options. When you reach your destination, check out the fitness center in your hotel or evaluate any nearby health clubs. If none are available or if you are unsatisfied with what you find, consider alternative options. Look online or ask the concierge about local parks and trails, run the stairs, perform body weight exercises like military or handstand push-ups, squats, pull-ups, or swim laps in the pool.
- Intensity. Recent studies have shown that just ten to 15 minutes of exercise each day will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. That said, the more exercise you get the lower your risk. Still, with your busy schedule while on the road, less time at an increased level of intensity may better fit your lifestyle. Whatever exercise you select or length of time you dedicate to it, try to perform that movement at high intensity to get the most out of your time.
- Maintain a routine. Try to exercise at the same time of day you would if you were at home. Don’t be afraid to let yourself off the hook from time to time if you are suffering from extreme schedule changes or jet lag, but try to remember that regular exercise will help you to better adjust to the new schedule and manage your stress levels.
