Airports are loud, crowded, often cold and generally notorious for being serious time wasters. Between baggage check, multiple security checkpoints and standing in lines the entire time, you can spend a significant amount of time at the airport before you ever reach your gate. Check out this list of tips from Short Term Housing for saving time at the airport.
Carry bags on the plane. If possible, avoid checking bags, since the process can easily take up to 90 minutes of your time. Not only does that waste a significant amount of time, it also puts you at risk of missing your flight, especially since, after checking your bag, you will still need to pass through other security checks.
Use alternative check-in options. There are multiple convenient, efficient alternatives to checking in to your flight, alternatives that are much faster than standing in line at check-in. Online check-in allows you to check-in to your flight up to 24 hours in advance, securing your seat well in advance of departure. The airport kiosk check-in is also a great option, especially if you need to check a bag but want to avoid the line at check-in. Curbside check-in is also a viable option, especially if you are checking bags and running late for your flight, although there is a minimal fee associated with this service.
Use a suitcase with wheels. You will be able to move through the airport terminals much more quickly and easily if you aren’t weighed down by bulky luggage.
Evaluate security lines. Before you jump into the shortest line at security, take a moment to evaluate which line is actually moving the fastest.
Wear slip-on shoes. Being able to slip in and out of your shoes quickly and easily will help you to quickly prepare to go through scanners. Wearing laced shoes that have to be untied and re-tied later ads time and hassle.
Use a checkpoint friendly laptop bag. Save yourself time by using a checkpoint friendly laptop bag that allows you to leave your laptop secured in your bag.
Be prepared. Have your Ziploc bag of toiletries out and the contents of your pockets emptied as soon as possible when you reach the conveyor belt.
