Are you planning on making any trips to vineyards California, Italy or France in the future? Even many locations in the Midwest have wineries that are popular for those seeking wine tours, such as those in South Missouri along the Katy Trail.
However, when visiting those locations, many of us want to pick up an extra bottle of two of our favorite wines to take home with us, both to enjoy for our own pleasure or to give as gifts. The big question is: how do you travel with wine?
According to the Transportation Security Administration, travelers can now carry travel-size toiletries that comfortable fit in one quart-size, clear plastic Ziploc bag. Any liquid, including alcohol, that is greater than three ounces must be packed in your checked bag. If you are traveling internationally, or even in California, you may find that your airport sells wine at a liquor store after you have passed security. According to TSA guidelines, you are allowed to board the aircraft with liquids, including alcohol, after you have passed the security checkpoint.
Do note that you can’t take alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, in your checked luggage. You are allowed to take up to five liters of alcohol as checked luggage if it is packed in a sealable bottle or flask. Any alcohol with less than 24% alcohol is not subject to the hazardous material regulations.
The next question is how you keep those bottles from breaking in your luggage. We recommend the VinniBag, an inflatable travel liquid bag. It provides inflatable chapters to insulate your wine bottles, providing superior protection against impact or leakage.
If not for you, this wine travel bag makes a great gift for family and friends who are wine lovers or frequent fliers.
