We're in the business of travel safety and security, so when we heard Verified Identity Pass was shutting operations of its Clear program, we wondered what will happen to registered travelers' information?
The program (which was a partner of the TSA's Registered Traveler Program) was supposed to help frequent travelers (more than $250,000 registrants who fork over a cool $200 a year) zip through the airport security lines. But now that the company cannot reach an agreement with creditors and is discontinuing its service in 18 airports nationwide, leaders like Rep. Bernie Thompson who chairs the House Homeland Security wants answers from the TSA.
Here's the info. the TSA gave participants in the Registered Traveler Pilot Program, which concluded in July 2008:
Information submitted to TSA during the Registered Traveler pilot program (up until July 2008) will be destroyed in accordance with the record retention period approved by the National Archives and Records Administration as follows:
No match - one year after access based on the security threat assessment is no longer valid (August 1, 2009)
Potential match - seven years after access based on the security threat assessment is no longer valid
Confirmed match - 99 years after the security threat assessment is completed
Its still unclear what procedures the company will enforce to protect passenger's personal information.
