Even if you're not planning a trip any time soon, it's hard to resist the allure of a passport to call your own.
Barring the sometimes unflattering photos, the tiny booklet is key to trekking the planet to your heart's content. So, how do you apply for a U.S. passport?
If you are a passport newbie (like I was a few weeks ago) here's what you do:
- You can check for your nearest passport application location here, but you usually go to a post office or your county's clerk of the circuit court
- You must apply in person if:
- You are applying for your first U.S. passport
- Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen or damaged
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were less than 16 years old
- Your name has changed since your U.S. passport was issued and you are unable to legally document your name change
- You must complete and submit for DS-11
- Submit evidence of U.S. citizenship
- Present Identification
- Pay the fee
- Provide two passport photos (If you are a AAA member, your pictures are free)
